Where do I start? There were authors. There were artists. There was a singer. There were books, paintings, healthy snacks, chocolate treats, a Mary Kay consultant, a motivational speaker, an inspirational speaker, a gallery owner and the son of a single-mom.

Keeping all of that in mind let me tell you a story.
All of this was taking place as the clock struck 1 o’clock pm on Saturday, 8/10/13. The music was lowered as I and my sciatic pain rose to speak. The words began to flow, and the crowd settled in for the ride. Applause ensued, and warm feelings filled the room.

I looked out to the audience and smiled towards some friends.
You know the saying, “Time flies when you are having fun?” Well, on 8/10/13, that’s how I felt. I hobbled around with my cane to check on our 24 authors. They all seemed pleased. Not only did they network and chat with the guest, but they also reached out to each other.

My dream came true. I wanted a place where artists across our small state would come together. I wanted them to embrace each other and help one another. I wanted to see people walking out with books in hand and that they did.

Each time I walked past the front door, I heard sounds of Denise Jones-Gagne and “Inner Grooves” singing on the front patio. I ran into others, as I walked by the front door to go upstairs, caught by the tune.

“She’s really good, isn’t she?”

“Yes, she is wonderful,” said a guest of The Wallingford Writers’ Community 1st Semi-Annual Free Artist’s Showcase.

I, Melissa Flynn, hereby mark this event as a Success. Perfection? No. Smiles, a few sales, music, food and happy people? Yes.

So for those who missed it, you will have other opportunities. Email or call me with questions if you are an artist who is interested in taking part in the next event.

The 2nd Semi-Annual Free Artist’s Showcase will take place on February 8, 2014. It will be at the Wallingford Public Library at 200 North Main Street in Wallingford, CT.
